Tarmac secures flood of Environment Agency projects

 

The Environment Agency has selected Tarmac to supply primary and recycled aggregates for projects in England and Wales over a four year period.

The agreement will see Tarmac supply loose aggregates for nineteen areas under a framework worth around £4 million a year to maintain the Environment Agency's assets which include flood defences, coastlines and watercourses. As a framework supplier, Tarmac will deliver aggregates ranging from 4-5 tonne blocks of armour stone to 6mm drainage gravels and 0-4mm sand products.

Tarmac will work with the Environment Agency to determine the most sustainable supply of aggregates for each project, ensuring that aggregates are not transported further than fifty miles from source to final destination in order to reduce carbon miles. In some instances, this will mean that a local supply of primary aggregates, or a combination of both primary and recycled aggregates maybe more sustainable and cost-effective.

Heather Pearce, senior procurement officer at the Environment Agency said: "In order to become a supplier, we undertake a rigorous tender evaluation which includes factors such as sustainability, quality of materials, operational and delivery requirements, management information and health and safety. High scores in all of these areas, as well as competitive pricing led us to award the framework to Tarmac."

Paul Holmes, head of National Accounts for Tarmac said: "By consulting with the Environment Agency on a project-by-project basis, we can ensure that the most sustainable supply of aggregates is selected. This close partnership will assist the Environment Agency in meeting its targets to deliver year-on-year improvements in reducing carbon miles, as well as increasing the use of recyclable aggregates in flood defence projects."
